What is an IP Address?
An IP address, short for Internet Protocol address, is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. IP addresses serve two main functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing. They allow devices to communicate with each other and facilitate the routing of data packets across networks.
There are two primary versions of IP addresses in use today: IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) and IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6). IPv4 addresses are 32-bit numerical values expressed as four groups of numbers separated by periods, such as 192.168.1.1. IPv6 addresses, on the other hand, are 128-bit hexadecimal values represented as eight groups of four hexadecimal digits separated by colons, such as 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334.
IP addresses are essential for enabling communication between devices on the internet, allowing data to be transmitted between computers, servers, and other networked devices worldwide.
